State Board Of Education Approves Charter-Only SELPA
This November, the State Board of Education (SBE) unanimously approved the Sonoma County Charter Special Education Local Planning Area (SELPA), a charter-only SELPA which will help improve special education service delivery to students attending charter schools throughout the state. This new SELPA offers more options to charter schools by giving charters the ability to have autonomy over their special education operations.

Dispelling Special Education Myths in the State Capitol
It is often stated that charter public schools do not serve the same population of students with unique learning needs - such as students with disabilities - as their traditional public school counterparts. To dispel this myth, CCSA's Special Education and Government Affairs teams held a special event for policy makers and legislative staffers. The meeting, which took place at the State Capitol, attracted staff from Assembly and Senate education committees, the Department of Finance, the Legislative Analyst's Office, the California Department of Education, numerous Legislative offices, and two Congressional offices. The roundtable discussion, which was fueled by questions from the attendees, focused on current successes and challenges of charter schools when it comes to serving students with disabilities.

Special Education Update
Charters interested in exploring LEA status for special education for the 2012-2013 school year, must submit a letter notifying your existing District and SELPA of your intent to exit the SELPA by June 30, 2011. Scenes from Schools: Fenton Avenue Charter School
"Scenes from Schools" is an occasional piece on the CCSA News Blog that offers a glimpse at the tremendous work taking place on charter school campuses across California. Today's "Scenes," actually takes place at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, not at a school, but reflects the successes of Fenton Avenue Charter School in Lake View Terrace in the words of school Director David Riddick.

CCSA Statement on Special Education in LAUSD
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) board approved a new Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) reorganization plan, which will give charter schools better options and more flexibility in special education service delivery. Jed Wallace, President and CEO of the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA), released this statement on Special Education in LAUSD.

Record Number of Submissions for Charter Schools Conference
CCSA rebuilds the annual California Charter Schools Conference program each year through a "Call for Presentations" for breakout sessions. This year, we received more than 500 proposals in response to our Call for Presentations, a new record for the conference.
