The Mt. Diablo School Board rejected on Tuesday night a petition to convert Clayton Valley High School into a charter school. Chase Davenport, CCSA's vice president, School Development, issued the following statement:
"We are extremely disappointed in the Board's denial of the Clayton conversion petition, especially after petitioners--made up of teachers, parents, and other community members--had worked so diligently to meet the Board's set of unnecessary conditions and tenuous demands. With this action, the Mt. Diablo School Board has turned its back on parents, students and community members that took action to improve the education of their kids."
"This outcome, however, was predictable given the Board's actions from the very beginning, including pitting district schools against each other, presenting misleading information ahead of students needs. The Board clearly had no intention of supporting this effort to improve education outcomes."
"Charter schools are public schools of choice and across the state, conversions are proving successful models that are having a positive impact on students and families. It's unfortunate that a group of educators, parents, students and community members eager to act on identified solutions to improve teaching and learning were denied by the very body charged with those same responsibilities."
"The California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) will continue to support Clayton Valley petitioners as they submit their appeal to the County Office of Education, and fight for their school and their students."
