Statement from Myrna Castrejón, Senior Vice President, Achievement and Performance Management, on UC Berkeley Studies on Teacher and Student Mobility in Charter Schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD):

"While we think these are interesting studies, which ask critical questions necessary to explore student and teacher mobility in all of the LAUSD's public schools, including charters, the data in these studies is largely based on information provided solely by LAUSD, with significant over-representations of conversion and affiliated charter schools. These schools are essentially schools of the district, particularly for the purposes of employment. Start-up and independent charters, which make up the overwhelming majority of the charters in LAUSD (90%), are underrepresented. While the data point to interesting results and lay out very important research questions to be explored, we would like to ensure that the differences in charters' typology are detailed and taken into account."

"LAUSD has the highest number of charters of any district in the country, with 180, and the majority of those are start-ups and autonomous. These are major variables that are not specifically addressed in the study, resulting in a sample of schools which is not representative of the charter school environment within LAUSD. Because of this, we would caution against reading these results as broadly representative of the charter school sector in Los Angeles."
