October 21, 2010: Identifying and securing adequate facilities for charter students is a challenging task for many of our state's charter schools. CCSA advocates for equity in facilities for our charter schools and students, and offers support and resources from our regional and statewide staff, as well as our legal, legislative, and communications experts for those seeking facilities or needing assistance with issues that may arise. That is why CCSA is cosponsoring two Charter School Facilities workshops with the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.).
The workshops, one in Northern and one in Southern California, will assist charter organizations and charter schools in addressing critical facility issues. Each workshop will give an update on state funds available for charters, provide a roadmap for successfully accessing state funding, and look ahead to future funding and programs for charter facilities.
Expert panel members will focus on working with city and county governments in the approval process and the distinctions between the privately funded charter projects and State-funded charter projects. Specific information will be provided on getting projects approved either through the city or the state process, including tips for navigating the Division of the State Architect (DSA)/Office of Public School Construction (OPSC)/California Department of Education (CDE) with charter projects on District sites. The workshops will be held at recently constructed, award-winning charter schools which will be used as case studies.
