August 11, 2010 The charter school movement is dependent upon the hard work of visionary founders, leaders, and authorizers, plus dedicated teachers and volunteers and inspired students. The Association is proud to recognize several of them this month.
Seventh grade students at Lewis Center's Academy for Academic Excellence (AAE) placed first, and eight grade students placed fourth, in San Bernadino's Academic Pentathlon. Additionally, AAE student Alyssa Yosten took home individual first place medals in all categories. The competition is a rigorous academic event that tests middle school students in five categories: Science, Math, Essay, Literature, and a Super Quiz in Social Science.
The National Council of La Raza--the largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States--honored Los Angeles' Camino Nuevo Charter Academy as one of its 2010 Regional Honorees. The school was recognized for its exemplary work in positively impacting the local community.
