Region Overview: Northeastern California

Spanning inland from San Joaquin County to the Oregon border, the northeastern California region is home to more than 120 public charter schools in 18 counties. Each school is unique in their governance, culture, and educational program, offering parents and students a wide variety of choices.

region-ne.jpg Recent accomplishment by charter schools and their students and staff in the region include:

  • Aspire Port City Academy, St. HOPE Public School 7 (PS7), Westside Preparatory Charter, Aspire River Oaks Charter, and Aspire Rosa Parks Academy received the 2010-11 Title I Academic Achievement Award. To meet the criteria for this distinction, the school must demonstrate that all students are making significant progress toward proficiency on California's academic content standards and the school's socioeconomically disadvantaged students must have doubled the achievement targets set for them for two consecutive years.
  • Aspire Langston Hughes Academy was named a 2011 California Distinguished School.
  • The Silicon Valley Community Foundation awarded Rocklin Academy a three year grant to support the growth of enrollment at Western Sierra Collegiate Academy.
  • Brian Martinez, principal of Grass Valley Charter School, was named Middle Schools Principal of the Year by the Nevada County chapter of the Association of California School Administrators.
  • Sherwood Montessori, a K-8 charter school in Chico, was invited to take part in the celebrated "Chefs Move! to Schools" program by national nonprofit Partnership for a Healthier America.
  • Caleb Buckley, the director of Yuba River Charter School, was named president of the national Alliance for Public Waldorf Education. Established in 1994 as the first Waldorf-methods charter school in the United States, Yuba River Charter School is a public institution that has become the model for Waldorf charter schools nationally.
  • Timothy Strauch, who teaches at Gateway's Community Outreach Academy, a charter school in Sacramento County, was named Teacher of the Month December 2010 by ABC News10.
  • Aspire Capitol Heights Academy was named a 2010 Blue Ribbon School. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress and helped close gaps in achievement especially among disadvantaged and minority students.
